Homespun Hobbies

Those among us who are "crafty" take this skill for granted sometimes.

It's a fact that not everyone is able to sew, knit or crochet.  If you possess these skills, you can make money doing it!  There are many routes to take to sell your goods online.  You can sell them on Ebay or Etsy, or any number of other online craft marketplaces. But getting started can be overwhelming!

To help you get started on the right foot, I recommend Liz Rad's book Knitting for Profit.  (The title says knitting, but the book applies to crochet as well!)  This book was carefully researched by interviewing successful crafting entrepreneurs.

One of the entrepreneurs Liz interviewed while doing her research was Emi from Hectanooga Patterns.  Emi is a very successful online crochet entrepreneur.  She has branched out into pattern design and video tutorials, but it all started with online crochet sales.  Emi has teamed up with her daughter and niece and together they are the Three Crochet Chicks featured in this blog.

If you're thinking about getting started Crocheting for profit, I've got a great primer for you!
Three Crochet Chicks has kindly offered my readers:

Three Crochet Chicks often offers free patterns and specials.  If you're a crocheter be sure to subscribe to their blog!

Everyone's a Teacher!

Use the power of the internet to broaden your scope!  Why teach people one at at time?  Just because you always have... doesn't mean it's the best way!

Do you watch YouTube?  I do.
Did you know that YouTube pays you when people view your videos?  They do.
The more views you get, the more money you earn.

Have a look at these youtube channels where people have been enormously successful sharing their hobbies with others.

PianoVideoLessons - over 1000 subscribers and nearly 300,000 video views.
DocMisty - preschool "stuff" - almost 1,000,000 video views!
CyberSeams - a Knitting Channel with over 11,000 subscribers and over 10,000,000 video views!
Your Teacher-  36,000 subscribers and 27,000,000 views!

Do you have  knowledge to share, video camera and an internet connection?  What are you waiting for?

Do you Love Something?

Are you a homeschooler?  Or, do you have a hobby that you love to talk about? Do you ever wish you could get paid to promote your favorite curriculum or craft supply?

It's possible you can!

There are many businesses out there that offer "affillate" opportunities.  This means that if you refer your contacts to their product and they buy it, you'll get a commission for the sale.

If you're worried that you'll feel like a pushy sales person by doing this.  You won't.

Affiliate marketing can be invisible to your audience.
For example:  If you've had a conversation with a friend about a great book and they were interested in it, just send them a quick email after your visit giving them the link to the book. -- It's the friendly thing to do!  -- Use your Amazon affilliate link code (amazon teaches you how) and when they follow the link to peruse the book and buy it, you'll get a comission.    You'll also get a commission on anything else they buy during that shopping experience.
How easy is that?

There are many ways to spread your enthusiasm about a book or product.
  • You could blog about it and include the link.
  • You could use your affiliate link in forums when you make reference to a favorite product while answering someone's question.
Once you get started you'll find all kinds of ways to spread your affiliate links in practical, profitable ways!

Amazon comes quickly to mind, but there are many many affiliate sales opportunities.  Just look at the bottom of any website for the word Affiliates.

Turning Hobbies into Money

Can you make money doing something you love?

It's easily overlooked, but you can turn your hobby into a job.  And in fact, you likely should.  The fact that you enjoy doing something enough to make it a hobby means that you're good at it.

Think about that.  Do you enjoy doing things you're NOT good at?  If you're not good at dancing do you like to dance?  If you're not good at basketball - do you like to play basketball?  If you're not good at cross-stitch do you like to do cross stitch?  Of course not!

When you're good at something, you enjoy doing it.  And the reverse is a great clue to your employable skills.  If you love doing something, you're probably good at it!

Make  a list of the things you enjoy doing everyday.  Do it now. One of these is your ticket to starting to earn an income from home!

Getting Started Working From Home

Trying to find your ideal work at home job?

One of the first questions I ask people is:  what do you love?

If you need to earn extra money this is an important question.  Working from home can be dangerous.  You can't leave your place of work and set problems of the day to the back of your mind.  You have to live where you work.  This means that you're continually surrounded by the opportunity to work.

If you choose a job in a field that you love, this will maximize the enjoyment you get out of your job and it will also minimize any negative feelings associtated with work.

What do you love?
Children?
Baking?
Sewing?
Writing?
Sleeping?

4 out of 5 of those answers can earn you money from home, and in fact the last one can, too...but not in the way you might expect!

Please read on, and explore your options for working at home!
